The BC Lions Football Club is excited to announce this morning that it will stage the inaugural sports event in the newly-renovated BC Place on Friday, September 30th. The opposition that night as well as the full CFL schedule is expected to be announced soon.

“This is another historic day for our organization and we are absolutely thrilled to be opening up the new BC Place on September 30th,” said Lions president and CEO Dennis Skulsky. “It is our honour and privilege to host what will be BC Place’s first professional sports event under the new retractable roof. This outstanding facility is going to be Canada’s premier sports and entertainment venue and I can’t think of a better way to thank our fans who have supported the club so loyally during our time away from BC Place.”

The stadium, which will feature a retractable roof, new seats and a centre replay screen closed for renovation in April 2010. In addition to being the home field of the BC Lions, the new BC Place will play host to Canada’s largest annual sporting event, the 99th Grey Cup on November 27th.

“Tremendous credit is due to our partners at PavCo,” added Skulsky. “Committing to a specific date for the completion of this massive project demonstrates their hard work and determination to deliver this amazing new venue. I would also be remiss if I did not acknowledge CFL Commissioner Mark Cohon for recognizing the importance of this information being delivered to our fans prior to the release of this year’s schedule.”

The Lions will begin regular season play in July at Empire Field on the grounds of the PNE before returning to BC Place in September.
