Quotables: The best training camp pranks

When you have fifty-plus football players staying under the same roof for a couple of weeks, there is bound to be some shenanigans! In our latest instalment of Training Camp Quotables, we catch up with three Lions vets, plus a coach who has seen his fair share of training camp pranks. What happens at camp, stays at camp? Not quite!

Rolly Lumbala Happy

“Keron Williams always celebrated a sack by posing like Wolverine from X-Men and he eventually had a cardboard cutout of himself doing the pose above his locker. He had Wolverine’s visor on it. One year one of our camera men snapped a photo of Jason Aragki in nothing but a jock strap, doing the same pose with the visor and they blew it up and replaced it with Keron’s version above his locker and didn’t tell him so he was quite surprised. ” – Rolly Lumbala

KhariJones “My first Lions camp as a player was 1999 in Chilliwack. We had a linebacker named Paul Lacoste who would eventually be CFL Most Outstanding Rookie. In those days, rookies were required to sing at mealtime and Paul refused so someone eventually put manure inside his locker. When he came out for practice he still had some in his helmet, maybe even his mouthpiece. We called those type of pranks ‘the phantom.’ If you didn’t perform rookie duties, the phantom would eventually pay you a visit.” – Khari Jones

Ryan Phillips & the secondary

“Man, some of the best ones I cannot share, but there has been plenty of fun ones over the years. Guys having to sleep on boxsprings because their mattresses got stolen, toiletries getting stolen, other guys have had to walk to practice in bare feet because we stole their shoes. It’s all in good fun and those who get pranked learn to embrace it. It’s a good way to establish a team bond.” – Ryan Phillips

“A couple years back we had Khreem Smith’s roommate hide his toothbrush and return it. Then for rookie initation night we had recorded a video of the culprit appearing to brush his teeth and other areas of his body with it. We had Khreem good, but it turns out it was a joke and not his actual toothbrush.” – Travis Lulay
