Training Camp Report: Mini-Camp Day 3

Mini-Camp Day 3

Kamloops –  BC Lions mini-camp came to an end with a morning session at Hillside Stadium in Kamloops. It was a solid practice as select rookies at all positions looked to make one last impression before joining up with the veterans on Sunday morning for main camp. Tempo was increased and the mood was jovial despite windy and autumn-like conditions. Wally Buono praised the group for its mental toughness, as a couple of players were battling through minor ailments, and willingness to play with an edge.

WHO STOOD OUT:

On offence, receiver Devonn Brown hauled in two long touchdown passes during scrimmage play while managing to cause early separation from the defenders. His speed caught a lot of people’s attention on day three. The second catch was a nice, deep spiral thrown by Keith Price. 2016 draftees Brett Blaszko and Shaq Johnson both did well in the scrimmage as well as ‘skelly’ drills.

On defence, Anthony Gaitor once again showed his speed in the secondary and had the hit of the day on Uzoma Nwachukwu. To the receiver’s credit, he got up right away and ran right back to the huddle. Andrew Hudson set the tone early with a nice tackle for a loss on JC Coleman. Hudson and the entire defensive line unit showed sparks over the last three days.

On special teams, second-year kicker Anthony Fera took advantage of the windy conditions with a few 50-yard plus kicks during special teams drills. It will be interesting to see how he performs in main camp with one year of pro action under his belt.36-D Davis 04

QUOTES OF NOTE:

“There was progress made. For the first-year players it was good to understand the game a little more as well as the speed. It’s also good for the coaches to get to know who they have. Now it’s going to get even more intense.”- Buono’s thoughts on mini-camp

“It’s awesome here. Why would anyone ever want to leave BC.”- Jas Dhillon soaking in the Kamloops environment

WATCHING:

Defensive backs Brennan Van Nistelrooy (ankle) and Willie Creear (groin) sat out for a second straight day. Van Nistelrooy says his injury is improving, while Creear is confident he can be on the field on Sunday. Fellow DB Matt McConnell of the Okanagan Sun did not take part due to a hip flexor injury.
