Quarterbacks across the CFL are breathing a little easier today as one of the CFL's most gifted and decorated defensive backs has retired. Barron Miles, who spent five seasons in Black and Orange as well as seven seasons with the Montreal Alouettes, announced Monday that he has turned in his shoulder pads for a clipboard and whistle.

"I am very pleased to have Barron join the Lions coaching staff for the 2010 season as well as adding his talents to our scouting department," said Lions GM and head coach Wally Buono.  "As one of the finest defensive backs to ever play in this league, Barron's career speaks for itself and I look forward to adding his leadership to our staff in 2010."

The Nebraska grad and former CFL Most Outstanding Rookie (1998) wrapped up a storied 12-year career in 2009 finishing among all-time CFL greats at the safety position. Barron set the all-time CFL record for most blocked kicks (13), ranking second all-time with 66 interceptions (Less Browne 87).

Appearing in 189 career CFL games (88 as a Lion), Miles finished his farewell season on a high note, picking up league all-star honours for the sixth time (99, 00, 02, 06, 08, 09) and bring his divisional kudos to nine.  Leading the league atop the interceptions standings for the third time in his career, the feared ballhawk also notched 54 tackles in 2009 - his highest total since his rookie season in 1998.

One of the Lions most consistent and dependable defensive performers, Miles appeared in three Grey Cup Championships, including the club's memorable 2006 victory over the Montreal Alouettes.

With his retirement from the Black and Orange, Miles will join former teammate Mark Washington in the coaching ranks, mentoring the clubs defensive backs.

One of the greatest DB's to ever play the game for sure - my favourite so glad to see he's still with the club. I was hoping to see at least one more stellar season, as I truly enjoyed his playing last year. I'm glad that the veterans who remain in the defensive backfield will continue to benefit from Yoda's presence.
