The BC Lions Football Club announced today that defensive lineman Brent Johnson has signed a contract extension, keeping him in orange through the 2012 season.
“Brent demonstrated last season that he has plenty of good football left,” said Lions GM and head coach Wally Buono. “He continues to be a leader both on the field and in our dressing room and I am pleased to have him back.”
Johnson appeared in all 18 regular season games in 2010 which pushed his consecutive games-played streak to 168 games. He also set a new all-time team mark with his 83rd career sack which came in the Lions’ final regular season game versus Saskatchewan.
Brent’s seven sacks tied him for the team lead with Korey Banks and earned the 10-year Lion his fifth career West Division All-Star honour. He also recorded 29 defensive tackles, three forced fumbles, two pass knockdowns and one tackle for a loss.
“I felt reenergized last season and I can’t help but feel this Lions club, with its blend of young talent and experience, has a legitimate shot at winning a title in 2011,” said Johnson.
Since joining the Lions from Ohio State and a brief tryout in the NFL, Brent has become one of the club’s all-time greats at defensive end, recording five divisional All-Star honours. His nose for the ball has resulted in 249 tackles, a club-record 83 sacks, 16 fumble recoveries, 17 forced fumbles, 28 tackles for loss and two offensive TDs.
Brent has not missed a game in his CFL career with his current streak now at 168 and only Norm Fieldgate (223), Glen Jackson (192) and Greg Findlay (176) have played more games on defence for the club. He is the only Lion to register 10 or more sacks in five consecutive seasons (2005-2009). He has played in 12 playoff games for the club, putting him in the top 15 in club history in that category and has never missed the playoffs as a Lion.
