The BC Lions Football Club announced today that GM and head coach Wally Buono has extended his contract with the organization to the end of the 2013 season.

Buono was entering the final year of his current contract after originally joining the club in 2003 and will undoubtedly add to his CFL lead in coaching wins over the next four seasons.
“Wally’s accomplishments over more than three decades as a player, coach and GM are unparalleled,” said Lions owner, president and CEO David Braley. “His commitment to excellence and his ability to get the very best from everyone in the organization make him highly respected across our league and I am excited about what the future holds for our club with Wally leading the way.”
Buono enters his eighth season with the Leos after leading the club to seven playoff appearances; five consecutive appearances in the West Division Final and a crossover visit to the East Final as well as a Grey Cup Championship in 2006.
In 2009, Buono surpassed Don Matthews’ 232 victories to become the all-time leader in coaching wins and now has 235 entering the 2010 campaign. Wally is also the Lions’ leader in career wins as head coach with 82. His consistency and success have been recognized with the CFL’s Coach of the Year award in 2006, 1992 and 1993.
“My time in BC has been tremendously rewarding and my passion for coaching is stronger than ever as I look forward to earning another championship for Lions fans,” said Buono. “David Braley has laid a solid foundation for the success of the Lions organization and I truly appreciate the confidence he has placed in me over the past seven seasons.”
