The BC Lions Football Club is pleased to announce this morning that Joe Paopao will join the club’s coaching staff tutoring the team’s receiving corps.

The former Lions quarterback (1978-1983 and 1990) has also previously served the Leos as head coach in 1996 as well as various offensive roles including backfield and quarterbacks coach (1989, 1991) and offensive coordinator from 1992-93 and 1999-2000.

Paopao was most recently the head coach at the University of Waterloo (2012-2013) and also served as the school’s offensive coordinator from 2007 to 2011.

“Joe is a meticulous teacher who demands a detailed approach to the game from his players,” said head coach Mike Benevides. “He brings 30 years of innovative CFL experience to our club and I know Khari and his staff are very pleased to welcome him aboard.”

The Hawaiian-born Paopao departed the CFL following the 2006 season after serving as offensive coordinator of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Prior to that, he made CFL stops in Ottawa as head coach of the Renegades (2002-2005) as well as Winnipeg (1997-1998) as offensive coordinator and in Edmonton (1994-1995) again, as offensive coordinator.

“I’m excited to be returning to British Columbia where my career in this great league began,” noted Paopoa. “The Lions have always been close to my heart and having an opportunity to work with Mike, his staff and some very gifted receivers is very exciting for me.”
