Sean Ortiz
White Rock native and UBC alum Sean Ortiz will attempt to crack the lineup at Lions training camp in June
The BC Lions Football Club announced today that safety J.R. LaRose and long snapper Sean Ortiz have agreed to terms on contracts with the team.

LaRose will attempt his CFL return after being released by the Edmonton Eskimos following the 2008 season. The Edmonton-native will bring 45 games worth of experience to the Lions defensive backfield when training camp gets underway in Kamloops on June 6th.

LaRose was the Eskimos’ starting safety for the 2006 and 2007 seasons notching 59 tackles during that time. The former CJFL All-Star suffered a season-ending injury midway through the 2008 campaign and became a free agent last winter. LaRose caught the eye of Lions coaches at a recent free agent camp the club held at its Surrey practice facility in April.

Ortiz will try to crack the line-up of his hometown club as a long snapper following training camp auditions with the Toronto Argonauts in 2008 and the Montreal Alouettes in 2009. The White Rock-born Ortiz attended Minot State in North Dakota for three years before transferring to UBC for his final year of eligibility in 2007.

The Lions also announced that quarterback Zac Champion has been released.
