Lions in the community to encourage reading and writing

February 05, 2010

With the on-field action on hold until training camp kicks off in June, the Lions continue to use the off-season as an opportunity to get out in the community to speak to youth at local schools, meet their fans, and have some fun too!

This week, Lions safety Jason Arakgi and friendly mascot Leo the Lion took a quick trip to Squamish to spend an afternoon reading to students at Stawamus Elementary School as part of the club's Read, Write & Roar program.

The 2010 season will mark the ninth year of the Lions' Read, Write & Roar literacy program in partnership with Literacy BC, the Vancouver Public Library, the Vancouver School Board and participating elementary schools.  Placing an emphasis on literacy through a fun, interactive journal, the Read, Write & Roar initiative reaches 15 school districts and more than 25,000 elementary school students.

The Read, Write and Roar program has become a successful Lions community initiative due to the kind contributions from our sponsors Raise a Reader/The Vancouver Sun and Kidzsmart along with our founding sponsor, Scotiabank.
