The awards keep piling up for the first-place BC Lions as they await an opponent for the Western Final slated for Sunday, November 20th at BC Place. Today, the CFL announced East and West Division All-Stars and the BC Lions have topped the charts with no fewer than 12 players.
On offence, the Lions boast five players including Travis Lulay, Geroy Simon, Angus Reid, Ben Archibald and Jovan Olafioye. For Simon, it’s his sixth divisional nod and comes after a stellar 1,350-yard season – his best since 2008. Left tackle Ben Archibald picks up his third consecutive West All-Star selection after notching two with the Calgary Stampeders in 2009 and 2010. For centre Angus Reid, it’s been seven seasons between today’s announcement and his first divisional All-Star season 2004.
Quarterback Travis Lulay, who was named the West Division’s Most Outstanding Player yesterday, picks up his first career All-Star selection and right tackle Jovan Olafioye, the West Division’s Most Outstanding Lineman notches his second in as many years.
On defence, the Lions are represented by linemen Aaron Hunt who earns his fifth division nod along with Keron Williams, the Lions sack leader, who earns his first West Division All-Star selection after East Division honours in 2008 and 2009. Originally penciled into the lineup as a back-up, Khalif Mitchell was a pleasant surprise all season and snags his first nomination.
Linebacker Solomon Elimimian who led the Lions with 92 tackles picks up his second divisional award while defensive back Dante Marsh is back on the West All-Star squad for the first time since 2008, his third overall selection. The gifted Korey Banks who will likely be a first-ballot Hall of Famer when his playing days are done picks up yet another division selection, his sixth in as many years as a Lion and seventh in a row since his days in Ottawa.
After laying claim to every current special teams award currently offered by the CFL, Paul McCallum earns yet another kudo with his fourth career divisional All-Star selection.
After claiming the West Division regular season crown in the win on Saturday, the Lions now await the winner of the Western Semi-Final between the Edmonton Eskimos and the Calgary Stampeders. The Lions host the CFL Western Final on Sunday, November 20th at BC Place with kickoff slated for 1:30 pm.
