The BC Lions Football Club announced today that all five members of its 2011 Canadian Draft class have agreed to terms on contracts and will attend Lions rookie camp slated to begin in Kamloops on Thursday, June 2nd.
Harvard receiver Marco Iannuzzi, kicker Hugh O’Neill out of the University of Alberta, University of Maryland corner back Michael Carter, Sherbrooke offensive lineman Yannick Sage and St. Mary’s defensive lineman Chris Hodgson will get their first taste of pro football on Thursday along with fellow rookies before veterans join them on the field on Sunday, June 5th.
Non-counters accounted for
Lions’ 2010 Canadian Draft selection Adam Baboulas returns for his second training camp and along with Bishop’s fullback Tim Cronk who was signed as a free agent will qualify as non-counters at this year’s training camp. Cronk wrapped up a five-year CIS career in 2010 recording 220 rushing yards on 47 carries and 205 more yards through the air on 19 receptions over 44 games.
In this morning’s CFL Supplemental Draft, the Lions picked up 6’1, 300 lb defensive tackle Alex Ellis. In doing so, the club surrenders its sixth round selection in the 2012 Canadian Draft.
In keeping with the organization’s commitment to developing football stars of tomorrow, the Lions have invited junior standouts Jordan Linnen (Langley Rams), Danney Turek (Okanagan Sun) and Aaron Smit (Kamloops Broncos) to take part in rookie camp. Past invitees include current Leos running back Andrew Harris as well as former Lions kicker Sean Whyte.
Guest coaches announced
Team GM and head coach Wally Buono also announced that Don Sweet, Pat Sheahan, Ryan Sheahan and Pat Bonnet will lend a hand as guest coaches this year.
Sweet is a former teammate of Buono’s from their days together in Montreal and will work with kickers Paul McCallum and Hugh O’Neill. Queen’s University head coach Pat Sheahan and his son Ryan with work with running backs coach Chuck McMann and receivers coach Travis Moore respectively. While another former Alouettes teammate of Buono and McMann, Pat Bonnett will help out on special teams.
