The BC Lions Football Club announced today that slot back Geroy Simon has agreed to terms to a contract extension keeping him in Black and Orange through the 2011 season.
“Geroy’s talent, work ethic, consistency and leadership have made him one of our most valuable players over the past number of years and I believe he will continue to be a productive part of our offence,” said Lions GM and head coach, Wally Buono.
Originally coming to the Leos after two seasons in Winnipeg, Simon has enjoyed eight amazing campaigns recording 609 receptions for 10,262 yards and an astounding forty-five, 100-yard receiving games. Averaging 91 catches and 1,554 yards over the last six seasons he also became the first Lion to hit the 1,000-yard mark in six consecutive years.
Currently carrying a streak of receptions going back 106 regular season games, having Simon in the lineup has been a key element in the club’s recent success. The Lions are 88-44-1 with Geroy on the field, 36-9 when he hits the 100-yard mark in receiving yards and 13-2 when he records a multi-TD game.
“I am very, very happy to be extending my contract with the Lions,” said Simon. “I love this city, I love this team and I want to do nothing short of winning championships for our fans.”
Staying with the numbers, Simon’s 71 receiving TD’s are a club-high and his 72 TD’s overall place him in third spot in team history behind only the great Willie Fleming and Sean Millington. Only five other Lions players have recorded more points for the club than Simon’s 436.
Only one player (Willie Fleming with 12,465 yards) has accounted for more yards from scrimmage than Geroy’s career Lions total of 12,302 yards. He needs just 164 needed to reach the all-time club mark in that category.
Simon leads the Lions in receiving yards in each of the past six seasons and has recorded at least one reception in 125 of his 129 career games. Durable and dependable, he has missed just three games in his eight years in a Lions uniform and has surpassed the 200-yard mark in receiving yards three times.
