I was a young news/sports reporter at CKIQ radio in Kelowna. Bob came to town in support of the new junior Okanagan Sun Football Club. The late Bob Harrison, my program director boss, who was the driving force in the creation of the team, had met and spoken with Mr. Ackles many times, and he always spoke very highly of this man.
I recall a game in the rain and cold autumn air in Kelowna when the Sun were on the field in a game that drew only the hardiest of gridiron fans and I had the honour of meeting Mr. Ackles. He was not only on the sidelines, he was close to the bench, encouraging the players on and off the field. He was really into the game. And he was smiling. What a great smile he had.
That this man of huge stature in the world of football was 300 miles from home, on a cold blustery weekend, cheering the lads on said much to me. He was warm, sincere and enthusiastic. His presence and support of the Okanagan Suns at the game meant so much to Bob Harrison and the Suns.
He was a one-of-a-kind person and his legacy will live on forever, not just for the greatness of his accomplishments but also for his lasting impression on people and his wonderful grace.
- Glen Robert McIntyre ('Black Mac' – CKIQ; 1971 -1975)
Our thoughts and prayers are with Scott and family. He will be missed by all. He will always be there on the field, cheering on the game he loved and supported and forever in our hearts.
- Robert & Alison de Groot
Bob, you will be dearly missed, God Bless!

To the Ackles family and the BC Lions family: We are so very sorry for your (and our) loss.
Mr. Ackles was, by all accounts, a wonderful human being and the type of person we should all strive to be. My family has been Lions fans for a long time, so we've been there for both the ups and downs. We like the ups a whole lot better and we have Mr. Ackles to thank for that. I’m glad we’ll see his name hanging in the dome with the rest of the hall of famers, I’m just sorry he had to get there this way. He will always be remembered for the person he was and the inspiration he’ll always be.
Rest in peace Bob.
- Greg, Cindy and Chris Keehn
I met Bob several times over the past years. I attended his Jack Diamond Award Dinner. Several years back, Bob gave me a couple of tickets [through a friend] to a playoff game. My wife and son attended the game and it was sensational. I repaid that kindness by becoming a season ticket holder. As a season ticket holder, I got a copy of his book The Water Boy. It was such a good read that I went out and bought copies for friends who had grown up in Vancouver. Bob's passing has left a hole in me. As his book showed, there is a strong bond with those of us who grew up in Vancouver [1950's] with the BC Lions. I concur with those that state Bob lived an exemplary life.
To Bob's family, I extend my sadness at his passing. I am also glad that I got to watch, with pride, the profound impact a local boy had on Canadian and American football.
God speed, Bob.
- Lou Blair
Bob Ackles was a man who believed in the impossible. I remember when he got here back in 2002, and he was on CKNW talking to JP McConnell. At the time, I remember people were allowed to phone in and welcome him back to Vancouver. One caller said to him,"Bob, I respect why you came back here to BC and what you are going to try to do. I think if anybody has any shot at turning this franchise around it would be you, but you have got too much talent to waste your time with this team."
Bob listened to him and waited til he was done and then said, "I think you are wrong. I know there are people out here that will think I can't turn this club around, but I have seen some of the damage and it can be fixed."
Because Bob set a realistic goal and had an excellent 5-year plan in place, we have a growing season ticket base and have a team that will be a cup favorite for the next 5 years.
Thanks Bob for everything you have done. Because of you, my passion for the Lions has become very strong again.
- Upsdell Family
The one time that I met Bob, he was great, all smiles and happy-go-lucky. I loved his book, and he seemed to be so full of life! He had no problem chatting with me for a few minutes at the BC Lions' locker room sale and I was more than impressed with his personality and his candor. The fact that so many people have stepped forward to remember Bob and the stories that have come out say so much about him.
- Kevin Steenbergen
Our thoughts go out to the Ackles family and their extended family, the BC Lions. We also will try to 'be the best that we can be.'
- Sandy & Bob
The biggest thing I'll remember about Bobby is the few times we met him I was with my kids & he always made time for them. He signed his book for the kids at the clothing sale last season. This picture was taken after the 2006 West Final. He was going into the banquet room to celebrate when my son Jason said hi to him. He asked someone to hold the armload of parcels he was carrying, came over talked to Jason & I for about 5 minutes and took this memorable picture which we will cherish forever.

We just wanted to send our deepest condolences to the Ackles family. We had the great opportunity to meet with Bobby at his book signing in Chilliwack. He truly is a gentleman's gentleman you can see the genuine love for the game of football and his fans in the expression on his face. We will miss seeing him on the field. Thank you for everything Bobby!

Bob: Many thanks for bringing my passion in watching the CFL back into my life!

ODE TO BOB ACKLES
To the tune of “Come on and roar you Lions roar”:
It is the time to gather here and raise our voices in a cheer,
From the mountains to the sea, he is the pride of all BC.
RAH, RAH
So we’ll buckle down and play the game and start his Football Hall of Fame
We sing out loud because we’re proud, we come to honour his great name.
He went from BC’s water boy to the Lion’s pride and joy,
So it’s with love and gratitude we’ll do that best that we can do.
Forever in our hearts and minds, here’s a toast to one of a kind.
We sing out loud because we’re proud, we come to honour his great name.
RAH, RAH, RAH!!!
- Patti Flanagan
After 25 years as season ticket holders, we will always remember Bob Ackles for bringing the best football back to BC. Thank you Bob!
- Doreen & Bill Griffiths
I had the pleasure of meeting Bob Ackles on several occasions since his return in 2002. Everything people say about the man is true. I will never forget meeting him at training camp in the 2007 season and having him not only show me his Grey Cup ring, but pulling out the full-size one from his pocket and letting me hold it. He was so proud, yet just one of the guys that day.
Rest in peace Bobby, your contributions to the game, your province and your country will never be forgotten.
- Brian Wawryshyn
My love of football came from growing up in Sarnia, Ontario. Getting out of high school early to watch our four teams play and compete was fun and exciting - memories that will last all my life. The BC Lions did best when Bob Ackles was in charge.
- Beckie Torra
With our deepest sympathy on the loss of your husband, father,in-law, grandfather, friend and team member.
- Raymond & Betty MacDonald
I just want you to know I am very saddened by the sudden passing of Bob. I went to public school with Bob in a little one-room red brick school house in Locust Hill, just outside of Markham, Ontario.
I am now reading his book and in it he mentions a good friend Ken Burrows who now lives in Port Perry - about 2 blocks away from me. Ken always kept me informed of Bob's accomplishments
- Anne Terry
My husband Chris and I attended the 2007 Grey Cup in Toronto, our first Grey Cup outside of Vancouver. It was there that we met Bobby Ackles. I bought his book and like so many others before me, he made me feel at ease and special while he signed my book. Later in the evening in the Lion's Den, he came over to us at different times to ensure we were having a good time. What a kind and unselfish thing to do. Bobby's book is my most treasured Lions' memorabilia.
We will always remember what Bobby did for the Lions and the CFL, but most of all we will remember his kindness to us that night in Toronto.
- Rita and Chris Taylor
We would like to wish all the Ackles family, friends, BC Lions organization, and lastly the fans our most heartfelt condolences. Bobby was one of the kindest and down-to-earth people I have ever had the pleasure to meet. He will be greatly missed by everyone that ever met him. His rapport with the "ordinary fan" was special. He always made you feel that you were special, that your opinion was wanted and valued. Thank you for allowing the fans a platform to express their feelings.
- Phil Nielsen and family
Bob, you will be remembered and missed!
- James Hodge
He was a humble man who knew how to treat people the right way. I work on the Lions stats crew and his concern for us will never be forgotten. His memory will live on. My thoughts are with the family.
- Tom Lawrence
Condolences to the Ackles family at this difficult time.
- George Chapelas
I would like to express my sincerest condolences to Mr. Bob Ackles' immediate family and the entire British Columbia organization. Through my schooling, I worked a Co-Op term for the football club, and it was an invaluable experience that I won't forget. Mr. Ackles was a classy gentleman who worked harder than anyone I've met, but always had time to hear things out.
My thoughts are with you during this difficult time.
- Kevin McLean
I am writing to pay tribute to Mr. Ackles on behalf of my 23 year old, developmentally disabled son Sean.
Sean loves football and the Lions and so at his urging a few years ago, I
purchased season tickets. The seats were fine but, curiously, we were
always surrounded by different people each game even though we understood we were in a season ticket area. One game, we were surrounded by a group of young men who were reasonably well-behaved at first but by the time the second half began were noticeably under the influence of alcohol. In the 3rd quarter, Sean was returning to his seat when the beer that had been placed under the seat next to me accidentally tipped over. The young man in this seat wrongly and loudly accused Sean of spilling his beer. In fact, it was knocked over by this man himself when he got up to let Sean through. He did not accept the explanation and he and his surrounding buddies started hurling verbal abuse at Sean and myself. As we left our seats to escape the the ridicule, this group stood up and continued to threaten us physically. I called the Lions office and told them about the incident and asked if it were possible to move our seats to an area where we would be among regular season ticket holders and free from the "yahoo" element. The Lions' representative was very sympathetic, got back to us in short order and moved us to where we are now, surrounded by wonderful fans, young and old, who are not only courteous to Sean but take delight in him. It was either the next game or the game after our unfortunate incident that the Lions introduced the program designed to ensure fans' safety and game enjoyment, now known as the "I'm a Fan not a Fool" program. I do not know if it was the incident with Sean that prompted the introduction of the program. However, I am sure that it was Mr. Ackles' managerial influence that solved our personal situation and that was instrumental in promoting a safe and enjoyable game experience for everyone.
I am sure Mr. Ackles was as astute as the best football minds when it came
to on-the-field product and issues but I have no doubt that there is no
sports executive anywhere who cared more for the fan than "Bob". He was
unique.
- John and Sean Casey
Bob Ackles re-established pride in BC Lions football. He was the epitome of "football fan" who enjoyed discussing the game with anyone. A favourite memory of ours was at the "Party on the Pacific" prior to the 2005 Grey Cup at BCPlace. Bob, as always, took the time to say hello, share a story and a drink, and smile for photos. Our Lions weren't playing in the big game that year, but that didn't stop us from sharing a great time. At Grey Cup, all CFL fans celebrate in thanks to the efforts, pride, and sacrifices that make up a football season. Just as all CFL fans, and especially BC Lions fans, should celebrate in thanks to the nicest man, football genius, and ambassador of Canadian football. We're Lions and Bob Ackles fans!
- Art Thomas, Marilyn Mondor, Larry & Sandi Gauvreau
Bob lived and breathed football. He breathed a renewed life back into the BC Lions franchise. Thanks Bob.
- Gerry Kersey
Thanks Bob for:
1. A Grey Cup Championship in 2006.
2. Bringing Wally Buono to BC.
3. Setting in place a solid football organization again!
4. Your book – it explained so much of the history of this club to me, as a longtime fan! Great reading!
- Rick Garrison
The true measure of a man is not what he acquires in his lifetime, but what he leaves behind. And Bobby Ackles left a true legacy -- to be all that you can be. He lived by example. No matter who you were you were treated with equal affection. Be you a pauper or a prince, when you spoke to Bob Ackles he made you feel you feel there was nothing more important to him than talking to you. He treated everyone the same. With respect and human kindness. The likes of Bob Ackles will not soon pass this way again.
By just being in his presence he made you BELIEVE. He truly embodied the old call to arms in life: "send me in coach, I'm ready to play!"
God's speed, Bobby! We'll miss you terribly but you will live forever because we WILL be all that we can be. We are all the better for having had you walk amongst us.
- Jack & Christine
In our thoughts and prayers, forever remembered with his easy smile and warm heart. The very best of the Lions - farewell Water Boy.
- Anonymous
A very special man, who in living out his dream career, allowed us to partake along side him.
- Paul Benwick
Mr. Ackles was not only a tremendous leader but cared passionately about the BC Lions, the CFL and amateur football in this province. It was with great sadness and shock I learned of his passing. It has left the club with a giant void and will take the efforts of many to continue the momentum Mr. Ackles has established since his return in 2002. I will always be grateful to he decided to come back and lead the team that has meant so much to him. My condolences the Ackles family and the BC Lions organization.
- Mark Booth
Thank you Bob for bringing back our BC Lions. True leadership is by example and you wrote the book on it.
- Peter Cech
I feel like I've lost an old friend. Bob was a guiding light and an inspiration to us all. A true blue BC Lion and a staunch supporter of the CFL , everyone will miss him. Heartfelt condolences to his family. My buddy Grant Scott and I have been season ticket holders for almost 35 years and we have benefited from Bob's many efforts. We appreciate what he has done.
- Dale Peterson
We all will miss you, Bob.
- William Gunn
As a longtime fan of the Lions, Bob will be sorely missed by all. A wonderful man who gave of himself tirelessly, a person who really touched everyone he came in contact with. He lived a life that was a total inspiration to all! Our heartfelt sympathy to his family, and his other family - the Lions.
- Tina Johnson & Pat Flinn (Medicine Hat, AB)
Our sincere condolences to Kay and her family on the loss of her husband and lifelong friend. We had the privilege to share a cruise with them. A true gentleman, he will be sadly missed by us all.
- H & E Hunt
Bob gave me my first job out of college. I came to BC instead of going to the Miami Dolphins. At the time I didn't know that it was the best move I could have made for my family. Bob Ackles had a good eye for talent and the impact that he made on the BC Lions organization was immeasurable. He we be missed by the BC Lions family.
- Mack Moore
We wish to convey our deepest sympathies to the Ackles family, and to all members of the BC Lions organization.
I have been a Lions fan since 1955 (when I was 10) and my wife, Lorraine, since 1972 (when she moved to BC). Bob’s phenomenal leadership and dedication have been the prime factors in providing us with an extraordinary amount of enjoyment during his years as GM and since his return in 2002. We have written our thanks to him in the past and we hope he recognized the deep gratitude and respect we had for him.
I was fortunate to shake his hand at a couple of the fan fests held at BC Place. He was incredibly gracious. On one occasion, I was accompanied by a friend who had been involved with junior football. Bob called him by name, and as we left, my friend stated his amazement; he had not spoken to Bob in 30 years! A friend of our daughter worked for a company that did some work for the Lions. She commented that the Lions’ organization made her feel like part of a family. Once when she was dining with family and friends in a restaurant, Bob came over to her and said hello, again calling her by name even though they had met only once.
Reading his book was another highlight for us and we are so glad that he took the time to share his story with his friends and fans.
Clearly, Bob was a truly wonderful man, and an incredibly gifted, insightful, and talented football executive.
Again, we wish all of you the best in coping with this tragic loss.
- Don and Lorraine Gordon
My family is so deeply saddened to hear of Bob's passing. I was just able to introduce my son, an 18-year old aspiring lineman, to Bob for the first time during the last Grey Cup ring presentation as we had always been elsewhere since the early 90s. Bob had not heard about the 1992 passing of my brother, Gary Switlo (Concert Box Offices, became Ticketmaster handled ticket sales). Bob was out of the country then. His first question was what was my brother up to. Wondering where Gary had been, Bob had figured him retired on some island. It was difficult to deliver the news on such an otherwise very happy occasion and Bob was visibly shaken. Bob, always the promoter, always the Lions at heart. In the early 70s, I tagged along to a meeting between Gary and Bob to speak of boosting ticket sales at the old Empire Stadium. Having just made teenager, I would be later manning one of the rickety ticket booths for day of game sales. Bob turned to me and asked me what I thought.
I thought he was just teasing me but he was sincere. I rather nervously shared my observations and some criticisms and he listened carefully, made notes, and graciously thanked me. At that time, most would have pointed me in the direction of cheerleader not business advisor but Bob made me feel valued and intelligent, a true equal despite young age and being female. I never forgot it, especially all those times I found myself the lone woman at the table, his smile would carry me, remind me. Thank you Bob. Always good words and a great smile, radiating such warmth and truly a wonderful example to the many whom you have touched.
- Janice G.A.E. Switlo
My deepest condolences to the family of Mr. Ackles and to his team the BC Lions, a club he brought to huge success both on and off the field. I had the pleasure of introducing myself and congratulating him on his team's Grey Cup Win in Winnipeg in 2006. What a pleasure! I have great faith as a devoted Lions fan that they will once again do the deed of bringing the 2008 Grey Cup home to BC both for all their fans, themselves, and of course in memory of the great Mr. Ackles. Bring it home, boys!
- Pam
My deepest sympathies. Bob Ackles was truly a great man and will not be forgotten by any Lions fan. God bless Bob Ackles.
- Glen Leon
This is from Susie who has known Bobby since he lived with Ky and Anne Owens. When I got the word of his passing I broke down, I was just stunned how could God take such a good man, then I remember he usually takes the good ones first as he has other plans for them but it doesn't make it any easier for those left behind. Bobby will always be in your hears and mine also. Kay, to some degree I know what you are going through. Just know our hearts and prayers are with you all.
- Susie (Barr) Purdon
God bless you, Mr. Ackles. May you rest in peace in God's kingdom. Thank you for always striving to ensure the BC Lions Football Club was an exciting product, both on and off the field. May peace be at your side,
- Marty O'Rourke
After watching how the Lions responded in such a natural way that we live and move on was a great moment not only for the team and Wally but to Bob's family as well. I met Bob at BC Place several times and just the way he was - one can see why he was such a success. We had a few good laughs and talked about this career from the beginning. We did not agree on everything but I always respected the man for what he has done for such a great game as football.
Our condolences to Bob's family, the team and players/coaches (past & present) that loved the man and enjoyed his company. Thanks Bob, and may God bless you with His special gift.
- John & Christopher Hinksman
Thanks for building and bringing the Lions to the attention of Greater Vancouver for so many memorable years! Rest in peace, Bob.
- Rita K.
After hearing about and reading about Mr. Ackles ever since I started watching Lions football in 1976 at the age of 15, I was honoured to finally meet him at the Lions' 2006 souvenir and jersey sale in the lower level of BC Place. Even though the room was packed, he still took time to come downstairs and walk around and chat with the fans there.
When he stopped to talk to me for a moment, I thanked him for coming back to BC and bringing the Lions football franchise back to where it was in in the '80s: big crowds and a first-rate team. He shrugged it off as if it was nothing.
I'll be at the July 18th game to honour him with all the other fans he brought "our team" back to. Rest in peace, Bob, and my condolences to your family. You will be missed, but never forgotten.
- Don Hilton
On behalf of myself and my 3 sons who enjoy all the Lions home games from a “family friendly” season ticket location a few rows down from where Bob usually sat in the box, thanks for bringing BC Lions football to my family like my dad did for me when he used to take me to Empire to watch the Lions in the late 60’s . Now, two generations later, my boys are enjoying watching the Lions and we look forward to each game as we come in from White Rock to downtown. Usually a burger on the way.
As Bob would want to know, Lions football games represent a time for dads and sons to share the pre-game ride to the game, full of anticipation, and the ride home all the while discussing the game we just saw.
We’ll have to hope that someday another guy like Bob will carry on with the understanding that going to a Lions game at BC Place game is a safe and fun place to enjoy some “family time”.
- Howard Steiss and sons
On behalf of the North Delta Football Association executive, coaches, and players we would respectfully like to pass along our sympathies to the Ackles family and the entire BC Lions football Organization on the sudden passing of Mr. Bob Ackles. Mr. Ackles was a clear example of how hard work, dedication and passion can lead to the successful completion of reaching ones goals and dreams. Mr. Ackles was an inspiration not only to people whom he worked with on a professional level for many decades, but to the many supporters of the team he so loved and developed over his two separate tenures. Mr. Ackles showed that even the smallest man in the organization, could grow to be the most influential and admired person in his chosen field. It is without a doubt that not only the BC Lions community and the Canadian Football Leauge will be two organizations that will miss Mr. Ackles, but he will be missed by the thousands of young children who play community football in the province of British Columbia. Once again on behalf of the North Delta Football Association please accept our sincere condolences.
- Ciaran Feenan
To Mrs.Ackles and family: Our heartfelt condolences go out to you at this time. Please know that we will forever honour the spirit of someone who meant so much to so many.
- Eileen Fowler
I am saddened to have heard of Bob Ackles' sudden passing. He has had a wonderful history with our BC Lions Football Club and left a tremendous legacy. My condolences to all the BC Lions family over this great loss.
- Tom Miller
I was saddened to hear of the untimely passing of a true legend, for if it were not for Bob Ackles who knows what the state of the CFL would be today. His vision and passion for our game kept it alive in Canada, by developing winning teams on the west coast he forced the other CFL teams to improve and compete. If the Lions keep the spirit of Bobby Ackles in their day-to-day operations and follow his philosophy of "be the best you can be"
then his legacy will live on forever.
- John Artuso
My condolences to the Ackles family and to all the BC Lions staff & supporters. It feels like the Godfather of football in British Columbia is gone.
- Dale Norrie
I met Bob in Kelowna back in the days of By Bailey, Ed Enos and Al Polard. I was about his age and also took cold wet towels to the players at training camp. My dad took us to Kelowna every year for training camp because he worked with Denny Vietch on the junior football side.
Bob impressed me as a young fellow and continued to impress me through his life. I followed his career closely and greatly appreciated his accomplishments, particularly what he did for the Lions. He was a real gentlemen in every sense of the word.
My wife and I left Bowen Island on Friday before Bob and his wife arrived. I could have quite easily been walking up the dock with him on Saturday had we stayed over because I would have introduced myself if I saw him. I could not help but think how helpless I would have been had I been there when he had his heart attack. I have subsequently taken the CPR course and bought the necessary equipment to assist in emergencies of this nature.
My wife Sharon and I offer our sincere condolances to Bob's wife and family. He was a great man.
- Bob Alliston
Rethink started working with Bob and creating advertising for the Lions in 2003. At our very first meeting I remember being both thrilled yet quite nervous that such a legendary CFL figure would accompany his marketing team down to our office. But Bob immediately set us at ease with his warmth and humility, not to mention his enthusiasm for our office's green Astroturf carpeting. At that meeting and the many more that followed, Bob was always great to work with. He was honest, funny, decisive and most of all respectful. He set a tone that made us want to do our best work for him and the Lions. His supportive and passionate attitude was contagious and every member of the team caught it. We looked forward to our presentations -- I could always be heard asking “is Bob coming?” because I knew that Bob would make us feel like we were the ones with all the fans.
Thanks for being a great client and friend Bob, you’ll be missed.
- Ian Grais (Rethink)
I want to send my condolences to the Ackles family. The legacy for me is that Bobby Ackles came back and helped save the BC Lions. The last two years I have taken my son over to see the BC Lions in the playoffs. This has resulted in my son becoming a fan and sharing my passion for football, and this year playing football here in the Cowichan Valley. I want to thank Mr. Ackles for making the bond between me and my son so much stronger and us now sharing the passion for the BC Lions. Thank you.
- Killoran MacDonald
I wish to convey my deepest sympathies to the Ackles family and to the members of the BC Lions organization.
I met Bob Ackles at a luncheon engagement when he first returned to Vancouver in 2002. I just happened to be sitting at the same table as he. During that hour and a half, I was struck by how down-to-earth he was and how engaging he was with everyone at the table. At the end of the luncheon, he made a point to give me his business card and asked that I give him a call if I ever needed anything.
Since that initial meeting, I have bumped into Bob at various events throughout the city. Always the jovial individual that he was he always managed to make the time to stop and say hello, asked how I was doing and always recalled what we last spoke about.
Bob Ackles was an amazing man and one of the nicest man I have ever met. He was a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather. He was a pillar in the community. His love for football and the BC Lions was second to none! He will be greatly missed by everyone that ever met him. His legacy will live on forever...his dream of a BC Football Hall of Fame will be come to fruition and he will most certainly be its first inductee!
- Linda
I attended the BC Lions game on Friday, July 18 as a season ticket holder. I would like to pass on my condolences to the family and the BC Lions family. Thank you for the privilege of letting the fans pay our respects to an awesome man. I am saddened at this huge loss to our great football team. Thanks go out to Wally Buono for his outstanding leadership through this tough time.

The Ackles family,
Thank you for sharing Bob with football, the players and the fans.
Your support made it possible for Bob to be dedicated , committed and successful in the game and his life. Truly, a team effort. Thank you.
And as for the BC Lions: the name is synonymous with Ackles.
Our sincere condolences,
- Drs. Pia & Wayne Longstaffe
Mr. Ackles was a class act and will be forever remembered as a great football ambassador.
- Dawne Helfrich
We are so sorry to lose such a important part of our BC Lions, but thank you Bob for all you did with the Lions. You will be missed so much but not forgotten.
Our condolences to Kay and all your family.
- Laurianne, Rob & Tyler Bardell
The highest praise I can bestow on Bob is whenever we spoke I felt like I was talking to my father. He was calm, confident and full of love.
He truly was a father figure to so many and for that we all can be thankful…
- Matt Dunigan
I had the privilege of working with Bob Ackles at four different football organizations, including the BC Lions. Nobody wanted to win more than Bob, but he never let his desire to win get in the way of treating people correctly. It made no difference what your job in the organization was, you were treated as an important part of the team. Class and dignity are the hallmarks of the way he treated people and the way he conducted his life. Ann and I wish to extend our condolences to Kay, Steve, Scott, their extended families and all Lions fans. We have all suffered a big loss but we are all so much better for having had Bob Ackles in our lives. All of football has lost one of the best people to ever work in the business. Roar Lions.
- Jeff Smith
A true icon that will be sadly missed.
- Bill Costain
Even a small man can cast a big shadow. What Mr.Ackles did for this team, the individuals on it, this city, and this league is immeasurable. We are all fortunate to have walked in his shadow.

As the daughter of a "charter member" of the 1954 BC Lions, and family season ticket holders ever since, we were saddened to hear of the tragic and sudden loss of such a great man. Along with his wife and family, our team, the fans, the people of Vancouver, as well as our province and those whose lives Bob Ackles has touched will have much to mourn. We will be forever thankful for Bob Ackles' efforts to revitalize our great BC Lions. we are ever so elated to look around the dome and see the seats nearly full; a far cry from when there were only 8-9000 loyal fans. Seeing such support and interest will take on a bittersweet significance forever in the future. we will always be reminded of Bob Ackles and promise to wear his button with pride alongside the colours!
- Jo-Ann Zador
I wish I had met this wonderful man. We were lucky to have him for the time that he was here. My condolences go out to his family.
- Barb Scanlan
With deepest sympathy and condolences to the Ackles family and the Lions organization. My prayers are with you for strength in this time of sorrow. May God continue to be with you all this season and in the future.

I met Bob for the first time at Grey Cup in Regina. He was the most approachable person their, even more so than the players were. He took the time to have a short conversation with me and really listened. I admired Bob for his dedication to football, in particular the BC Lions, and wish to offer my personal condolences to his family in their time of grieving. We will be greatly missed.
- Derrick Knee
Bob Ackles and I both became fans of the BC Lions on the same day, I'm sure. That was a day in 1953 when the Lions were awarded a franchise in the CFL. I was 14 at the time and if I had thought of it maybe I could have been the water boy. But I didn't think of it, and Bob did. It was a good thing for the Lions too because while I might have been a terrific water boy, I could never have gone on to become such a remarkable asset to my beloved Lions as Bob.
He is a huge loss, not only to the Lions, but the entire football community in North America and all fans of the game. Of course his loss is even greater to his wife, his children and his grandchildren. My sincere condolences goes out to them. Rest in peace Bob.
- Rod Macdonald
My name is Robin Boleski. I am the son of all-star tackle and former Lion (and Stamp) Lanny Boleski. I never much knew Mr. Ackles but my old man seemed to have ample respect for him. He was the GM of my beloved Leos when my father was there. And even though my dad has since passed on, he never had anything bad to say about Mr. Ackles while he was alive.
- Robin Boleski
For the manner in which you treated every human being that crossed your field with respect and admiration. May it serve as a lesson to each of us!
Though your 'roar' is now silent, it will forever be heard by the lives you have so deeply and dearly touched.
- Jamesie
At the Lions' last home game, I missed the chance to shake Bob's hand on the BC Place concourse to thank him for the wonderful last six years we have had with the Lions. Thank you, Bob, for all the work you did for all of us to again enjoy our Lions with pride. I will miss you.
- Tom Lindsay
The Ackles family will not be the only ones feeling the loss of Bob Ackles. He was the strength behind the BC Lions and highly respected in the CFL and professional sports in Canada. I know that he will be sorrowfully missed by his good friend Wally Buono as well. Thanks for your contribution to the Lions, Bob.
- Richard Coleman
I only met Bobby a couple of times and I felt like I knew him. He probably would not remember me, but that isn't important. He made you feel like he knew you. He will never be forgotten.
I told my wife that I felt like I lost a friend and there is an emptiness inside.
- John Gaudreau
My niece related this story to me. The incident happened about 3 years ago in Chilliwack.
Unbeknownst to Bob and a merchant, my niece who was working nearby could not help overhearing the conversation. The merchant was unscrupulously attempting to justify a substantial charge for services to the Lions that both parties agreed had not been rendered.
She said Bob handled this in a most professional manner. The conversation was intense and lengthy. The amount in question was substantial. Although he thought they were alone, Bob kept his cool, no foul language or even a raised voice but respectfully making it clear his organization would not oblige. The merchant walked away with dignity intact but without money in his pocket.
She wanted to step out and congratulate Bob, thanking him for this wonderful lesson in negotiation however under the circumstances she didn't think it was appropriate.
On behalf of my niece (and myself) this is a belated "thank you" to Bobby Ackles.
- Mike Hamel
Bob was always a great inspiration, proving that if you set your mind on something you can accomplish it, I will miss him.
- Kerry Mittleman
Thank you from a 40-year season ticket holder for helping turn our team around into the winning club it is now. Our deepest appreciation for your work ethic, your loyalty to the Lions and the CFL. You ARE the Lions!!!
- Nina
My husband and I were invited to a very small private season ticket holders meeting in May 2006 with Bob Ackles, Wally Buono, George Chayka, Jason Clermont, several of their sales staff and a few other administrative personnel at BC Place. Bob Ackles was most welcoming and very personable. He made me feel as though I was a real part of the team by being a supportive fan of the BC Lions. I felt included.
This world would be a better place if we all remembered never to rise above others, but to include them as they are in every aspect of life, regardless of the tiles after our name.
- Darlene De Julius
Quite simply, Bob Ackles is one of the main reasons we have been and will continue to be season ticket holders for the BC Lions over the past 6 years. His contribution to this sport, this team and the CFL cannot be measured in words. He was a big part in making the BC Lions such an exciting football team, he clearly cared about the fans and making sure we were entertained. But what we admired about him the most was that despite his notoriety he just seemed like a regular down-to-earth guy. Our deepest condolences go out to his family, friends, colleagues and members of the BC Lions organization that had the pleasure of working with Bob Ackles. His legacy will not be forgotten.
- Joe and Maureen Miller
As a football fan and huge Lions supporter, Bob will be missed. His life and legacy has helped me stay focused when I get down. Good-bye Bob.
- Brian
I've been a Lions fan since I was a kid living in Burnaby. I'm 47 now and still cheer for the Lions, living in edmonton. My prayers go to Mr. Ackles' family and friends and the Lions football team. When the Lions win the Grey Cup this year, Bob will be looking down smiling.
- Mark Capaldo
Bob, I'll always remember your spirit, others will remember your many, many achievements, but for me it was the invitation to your camp with Annis Stukus. I've been a big fan ever since. You human touch was just one of your gifts.
- John Huguet
We have been reminiscing about our encounters with Bob Ackles when he was on campus and here are some of the comments that came about:
- he was a friendly guy, very approachable
- it was great to see him come back again and again to dine in our Dining Room
- enjoyed talking with him
- Gerald, the chef, was surprised & honored when he was called to go see Bob Ackles in the dining room...and then to be given in person, by Bob, a copy of his book "The Water Boy".
- Al & I enjoyed havinglLunch together at the same table with Bob at FanFest Day here in Abbotsford. We had a great discussion around the table and found Bob Ackles to be a gentle, friendly person (just as Scott had been when he was our contact when BC Lions first booked with us). He said he did miss Scott but was proud of him and his position.
We send our condolences to the Ackles family and will be praying for them as they start to adjust to a life without Bob.
- Lorianne Gerbrand (Hospitality Director, Columbia Bible College)
A very classy man who will be missed. His contribution to his community will never be forgotten. I hope his family can take comfort in knowing that he was loved and respected by so many people in North America.
- Deborah & George Siu
Bob will be sadly missed , a giant among men.
- Brenda Lacoste
It is so wonderful that Bobby's name on to the ring of honour. I am a 3rd year season ticket holder and a longtime fan. My dad used to take me to the games at Old Empire in the 70's when I was a kid. When BC Place was built he took me there too. As a season ticket holder I have been able to take him myself to a few games, and sometimes I will take my son. Three generations have watched the Lions through these two stadiums and have been fans since the start. Now, no more Bobby. It's hard to imagine the organization without him. With his name on the ring of honour, we know he will always be watching. Let's just start calling BC Place 'Bobby Ackles Stadium'. You know for sure it will catch on. It would be like a code of conduct among pure heart Lions fans and spread from there. Once sportscasters start calling it Bobby Ackles Stadium then can I rest. Thank you Bobby - from my first game when I was 9 to a season ticket holder today at 40, I love my Leos.
- Peter Wright
I’ve been alive just over 40 years, a fan for 30+, and the two constants for me are Bob and Lui. Sadly both have moved on, Lui to business and Bob to a higher playing field.
I was saddened by our loss this week, it really will never be the same for me.
Bob, we will miss you.
God Bless Kay, Scott, Steve and the rest of the Ackles family, and Bob’s extended family with the BC Lions.
- Dan Mason
It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that the trustees and employees of the B.C. Sports Hall of Fame and Museum learned of the untimely passing of one of our own Honoured Members, Bob Ackles. Bob was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2004 in the builder category for his contribution to, and life in, football and particularly, Canadian football and the BC Lions. His rise from waterboy to general manager of the Lions, to senior executive in the NFL and XFL and finally, to president and CEO of the Lions is an inspiration for all young people. His contributions to the community went well beyond professional football to many charitable and worthwhile causes. Under Bob’s leadership, it was not enough for the Lions to play great football and win championships. Bob required and encouraged his players and staff to make the same contributions to community that he did. By doing so, Bob rebuilt a connection between a great football club and a great community and inspired many. His return to the Lions in 2002 led to a strong relationship between the Hall of Fame and the club. It is a relationship of which we are truly proud.
Our hearts, thoughts and prayers go out to Bob’s wife, Kay, his children Steve and Scott, his grandchildren and to all the members of the Lions family.
Bobby was more than an Honoured Member in our Hall of Fame. He was a supporter and a friend. He will be missed by us all.
- Bill Maclagan
I have been a BC Lions fan since 1954. In those years, when I think BC Lions, I think of the song "Roar you Lions Roar" and Bobby Ackles at the same time. Bob Ackles was (and is) as much of the BC Lions (and the CFL), as the game itself. R.I.P. my friend, you have made my life 2nd and short.
- AG (Arnie) Stone
I was saddened to hear of Bob Ackles passing. I am fortunate that I was able to speak with him when he signed my copy of "The Water Boy". Many times I have seen him walking through the crowd on game day. A regular guy, a giant of a man. Bobby, we'll miss you.
- Bill Iles

Speaking as a BC Lion fan, Bob always brought a sense of comfort and confidence to the team. When Bob was in charge there was feeling everything was going to be ok with the club. His proven track record of building and rebuilding the community support/attendance was a unique gift that will be greatly missed. My prayers are with his family and the team he loved.
- Garth
I am very sorry to hear of the passing of Bob Ackles, I love to watch the BC Lions' games. That is cool the way he made it up the ranks of the BC Lions.
- Amelia Galligos-Thomas
Wow, what a leader not only in the game of football but also in the community as well.
He showed that even nice guys can be winners!
He leaves a great legacy!
- Rob Tate
Bob was obviously a big part of football, and most of all he created so much success for the BC Lions Football Club, and will truly be missed.
- Richard George
My condolences to all Bob's family and friends. He was a great guy and will be missed.
- Nina Hart
Bob Ackles defined goodness for me as a human value . When your heart is true, as Bob's was, it is easy to see the goodness in others. The reason that so many of us were touched by Bob was that he saw the goodness in us. And by his example we took a second at ourselves and then extended the sense of goodness into good deeds for others. Bob touched my life in this way and I will be forever thankful . Thank you Bob.
- Wayne Holm
Bob Ackles was one of the finest human beings and an upstanding Canadian citizen. Our community is so very much richer for having been associated with Bob. We have been supporters and sponsors of the BC Lions for more than 20 years and we must credit Bob Ackles and his staff for the success of this fine organization. Mr. David Braley is to be congratulated for the operation and having a class act in Mr. Bob Ackles. We will forever be thankful for knowing Bob over the years. Our heart will be heavy for many years in memory of Bob and my heart goes out to Bob's wonderful family, Kay, Steve & Scott and their families. To the family, hold your heads up high, you have so very much to be proud of. Rest in peace, Bob.
- Arni May & family (Rossini's)
"The Water Boy" is a wonderful read. Through his book, fans got to meet a resourceful, tough, sensitive, funny, kind man. A role model for kids, fans and families. Bob brought life and then new life to the Lions and football in BC and Canada, and his spirit lives on.
- Dr. Phil Moir
I only had the opportunity to meet in person Mr Ackles once, and, that was last fall when as a season ticket holder I had the good fortune of getting a copy of his book. He was doing a public signing of the book, and he signed as I asked, "To the Leprechaun". I will keep the book forever, and hope to pass it on to one of our grandsons.
- Joseph B. Sullivan
Truly a deep loss not only to Mr. Ackles' family, but also to everyone who knew him. He will be missed!
- Joan Freeman
My family’s thoughts and prayers are with the Ackles family due to the loss of a great man and the cornerstone of building the CFL into a great league again. He will be missed for a very long time.
- Gerry Clermont
We will miss Bobby very much, and we will have very fond memories of times that we have been in the same company. One sticks in my mind of when about 60 of us went on the Mexican Reviera Cruise in 2006. We have pictures of the cruise and a great time was had by all.
We will miss his smiling face - he always joined us when we brought apples out to practice and he came and he got his Macintosh apple as that was his favorite. Rest in peace.
- Jenny and Ray Brittain (BC Lions Fan Club past president)
I have been a fan of the BC Lions since we first got television in 1958, when I was just 3 years old (not too long after Mr Ackles started with the team). I feel I grew up always hearing about Bobbie the Waterboy, even during his years south with the NFL. An irreplaceable icon is gone - we will surely miss his physical presence but he has left a legacy we can all be proud of. My sympathies to his wife, children and all members of the BC Lions organization.
- Debbie Richmond
My parents were the ones that got me hooked on the BC Lions. They were original season ticket holders and made the drive down from Kamloops for every home game. Talk about devoted fans! I was a season ticket holder in my own right when I was 18. In the 70's I worked downtown and became involved with the Lionbacker Club which if memory serves had weekly breakfast meetings during the season. This is where I met Bob Ackles. As a woman who was also an ardent football fan, I initially felt a little awkward at these breakfasts, but Bob Ackles was charming and made a point of welcoming me, recognizing that I shared his love for the game.
Throughout the years the fortunes of the BC Lions waxed and waned and sometimes we were season ticket holders and sometimes we were not, though even at their lowest attendance period we were often at the games. When Bob Ackles returned to the BC Lions I just knew he was going to make a difference. An immediate spark was lit in this city. He turned that spark into a flame which has in turn helped make this team the most exciting in the CFL. I did not know him at all well, though we had occasion to meet when I worked for several years on the JCC Sports Dinner committee, but when we did occasionally meet he was unfailingly friendly, open and willing to spend a little time. However it is not my few personal memories of him that I wish to write about, it is his years of devotion and love for this team and for their fans - even when he was not in the city I'll bet he had the pulse of what was going on here. There are very few people who make it to the top of their chosen profession that are as universally genuinely liked as Bob Ackles and this perhaps was his greatest accomplishment - this ability to communicate his vision for this team to both CEO's and seatholders in a way that made you want to join him for the ride.
- Leanne Jacobsen
We can and should learn what Bobby Ackles lived. He left all of us valuable lessons about being the best that you can be. He was a gentle soul and this world shall surely miss the goodness this man lived. All of us feel this huge loss. Many thoughts to Mr. Ackles' family and the entire BC Lions team - he shall live on with our Lions forever.
- Dawn Martyn
It is hard to imagine, but without the return of Bob, we might not even have the BC Lions in the CFL now. My sincere condolences to Bob's family and the entire BC Lions organization. The loss will be no doubt felt through the entire CFL.
- Ron McCall
LAST NOVEMBER, I HAD THE PLEASURE OF MEETING MR. BOB ACKLES AT THE GREY CUP/COUPE GREY IN TORONTO AT THE BC LIONS' PARTY. MR. ACKLES BOOK IS INTERESTING HOWEVER I DID NOT PURCHASE THE BOOK WHICH I WILL PURCHASE - HE HAS DONE A LOT FOR THE CFL.
I LIVE IN TORONTO BUT THE BC LIONS ARE MY FAVOURITE TEAM AS WELL AS ONE OF MY FAVOURITE TEAMS IN THE CFL. THERE ARE REALLY NO WORDS THAT CAN EXPRESS TO MR. ACKLES' FAMILY. MAY I SAY A JEWISH PRAY WHICH I SAID WHEN MY DAD PASSED AWAY AS WELL AS MY MOTHER. HEAR O'ISRAEL THE LORD OUR GOD THE LORD IS ONE AMEN THIS NOT ONLY BLESSES MR.ACKLES BUT TO MR. ACKLES' FAMILY. MAY GOD BE WITH YOU AT YOUR TIME OF MOURNING ALL FANS IN THE CFL OUR PRAYS ARE WITH YOU.
MAY MR. BOB ACKLES REST IN PEACE HE WILL BE MISSED BUT NEVER FORGOTTEN
- MARC SIMBROW
As a longtime fan of the Lions (dating back to the 50's), the Canadian game, and a long-time admirer of Mr. Ackles, I was greatly saddened to hear of his passing. He was truly a remarkable man and a champion of the sport he so dearly loved, and he will be sadly missed by many. May he rest in peace and may his family take heart in knowing how much he was respected and admired by so many.
- Chris Culpin
BROKEN CHAIN
"Little knew that morning that God was going to call your name.
In life we loved you dearly, in death we do the same.
It broke our hearts to lose you, you did not go alone; for part of us went with you the day God called you home.
You left us peaceful memories, your love is still our guide, and though we cannot see you, you are always by our side.
Our family chain is broken and nothing seems the same, but as God calls us one by one, the chain will link again."
- Blanche Cooke
The Lord broke the mould after Bob was born" a magnificient experience to have shared part of his life, never to be forgotten.
- Chuck Walker
The name bob ackles will go down in BC history as one of the greatest human beings that ever graced our football field or our province. Best wishes to his wife and family.
- Kelly Mcdonald & family
Thank you Bob, I still remember working with you stuffing envelopes in the old players lounge under the seats at Empire statium. You will be missed and forever remembered. God Bless.
- Jim Howard
Mr. Ackles was truly one of the good guys and I enjoyed an evening with he and his wife over a year ago. He was a dear good friend of my good friend, David Boyd who will miss him very much. I cannot remember hearing of the death of someone whose loss I felt so deeply even though I did not know him all that well. I do know he leaves a wonderful family, large group of friends and colleagues, and a city in mourning, that not many can match. He won’t soon be forgotten.
- Nicky Kirkpatrick
I saw Bobby in the elevator at the last Lions game and we lunched at the Pen in New Westminster earlier this summer. My funniest recollection of Bobby was at a Ridge Meadows sports banquet a few years ago. The comedian/ventroloquist got Bob up on stage to sit on his knee a la a modern Charley MacCarthy. Every time the comedian pinched Bob's neck, he had to open his mouth but not say anything. Of course the ventriloquist put lots of words in Bob's mouth. It was hilarious although I am not sure if Kay was totally appreciative of her husband's plight. Bobby was a wonderful man and will be terribly missed by all of us in the sporting fraternity and the public at large. May the Lord comfort and sustain the family as they pass through the Valley of the Shadow.
- Wayne McKay
Bob Ackles was the type of person we all want to be: he treated everyone the same, big and small; he had a good business mind and a big heart for the less fortunate in our society; he was honest in his words and actions; and above all, he had his priorities straight. A great family man who loved his city, province and country, and added to his list of friends every day, Bob made those of us who had the chance to meet him, better people. I met him twice, and both times had the honour of talking with him. I am very glad that I met Bob Ackles.
- Ian MacPherson
Billy Joel said it best in his song, "Only the Good Die Young". Mr. Ackles was a wonderful proponent of the Lions and Canadian Football and hopefully his legacy will continue. We have been season ticket holders for many years now, and will continue to be, as it is one of the last affordable, entertaining sports in our city, made possible by Mr. Ackles.
We had the good fortune to meet Bob at the last Lions Locker Room sale. (I don't know of many people in his position that would take time out of their busy life to attend such an event, but he did). My youngest daughter had chosen to read the "Water Boy" and was excited to let Mr. Ackles know that she was doing a book report and presentation to her class at school on him. He shook her hand and wished her all the best. Little did he know that because of him, her love of football grew that day.
We are happy that we have introduced our three girls to football, and especially to Bob for allowing us to do so. We will miss you.
- Koren Centola
As a longtime fan, I always think of BC Place as the house that Bobby Ackles built - I remember so well when it opened. It was such a great experience to be a part of that, the huge crowds, the team & the new facility. Personally I was sad when Bob went to the NFL but what an honour for him, how could he refuse. I knew he would do well there & make many friends which of course he did. I was so happy when he came back to the Lions in 2002 and had no doubt he would turn this franchise around. But my best memory of him will be how he always had time to say hello whenever you saw him & was so accomodating to everyone. As a businessman and as a person, he is truly one of the great British Columbians and will be sorely missed.
- Linda Harder
In the memory of Mr. Bob Ackles, I will not quit on my dream of playing in one cfl game. I'll continue on working hard until i reach my goal and possibly make a career out of it. By all means Bob said "Be the best that you can be" - I think I can.
- Tyler MacDonald
Bob Ackles: A great guy, a super person and a real friend. All my best and deepest
sympathy to Kay and the family.
- David Cashen
I had the pleasure to meet Bob once and it will be in my memory for ever a very kind and gracious man, this is the kind of people we need more of my deepest sympathies to not only the Ackles family but the entire BC Lions family - we have lost a great one.
- Colin Taylor
I had other words to share with you about Bob, but after seeing the tribute I wrote this to many inside my own organization because it is how looking at Bob's life makes me reflect on my own, so feel free to share it with others on your memories of Bob.
Thoughts of Mr. Ackles:
It was a heck of a tribute in Mr. Ackles memory...
Really makes you stop and think about things...
Your priorities, your passion, how much a team can mean to you and you to them... it was something great to watch for someone my age... for both the place I am in and the places I dream of going...
Over the past few years I have learned how to be thankful for what I have each day...
I thank God every day for several things... and whenever I am asked to pray or share what I am thankful for the following words come very easy from me...
"I thank the good Lord for another day and for making me a Stampeder".
I doubt I will ever say it enough, but thank you for the role you have taken in making me a part of that family.
- John Murphy (Calgary Stampeders)
Hi, my name is Toni. I am the Toni that Bob mentions in his book as his barber/stylist in Philadelphia. I'd like to share my story with all of you who knew Bob. Bob and I met when he stopped by my salon and asked the price of a haircut - I told him $17. He then asked "how about just a trim?" and I said $17.
He decided to go for it and got shampooed and as he sat in the chair he questioned why I had the Eagles' cheerleader photos on the walls and I told him that I was the stylist for the photo shoots. He then revealed to me that he was part of the Eagles organization as the team negotiator. Ha, no wonder he was trying to negotiate his haircut! I mentioned this story to a newspaper columnist and he wrote about Bob trying to negotiate a haircut and he wrote "welcome to the big city, Bob!"
I guess the Eagles paid him well because he continued to come to my salon and we developed a friendship. Bob never forgot me. Every year he would send me Christmas wishes from every football league he was with. I was so appreciative of his sincerity and made sure to send him Christmas cards and photos of my twin boys that he much appreciated. Bob sent me an autographed copy of his book and also wrote "Toni, can I get a cheap haircut?" Still negotiating!
I will miss my Christmas wishes from this wonderful, thoughtful man. My condolences to Kay and the family and to all who knew and had the pleasure of knowing this gentleman. Rest in peace my friend.
- Toni (Philadelphia)
