Roberts Tops 10,000 Yard Plateau

(Vancouver) BC Lions running back Charles Roberts made his debut in Black and Orange a memorable one going over the 10,000-yard rushing mark in the first quarter of Saturday’s Leos – Roughriders game.

Roberts came into the game just 13 yards shy of the monumental marker and becomes just the fifth player in CFL history to reach the milestone. The speedy back took a handoff from quarterback Buck Pierce for a 13-yard gain with less than a minute remaining in the opening frame and received a lengthy ovation from the partisan Lions crowd.

“It’s a great way to start my career here in BC but I also owe a tremendous thanks to my former teammates and coaches in Winnipeg.” said Roberts.

The future hall of famer spent seven and a half seasons with the Blue Bombers before coming to the Lions two weeks ago in exchange for fellow running back Joe Smith. Coming into the night Roberts played in 131 career CFL games with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. He left the Bombers as the CFL’s fifth all-time leading rusher with 9,987 yards on 1,853 carries for a career rushing average of 5.4 yards per carry. He was named as a Divisional All-Star each year of his career up to 2007 including one special teams selection in 2001. He has also enjoyed six straight CFL All-Star seasons between 2002 and 2007.
