Draft Profile: Nathan Coehoorn

CFL.ca Staff

TORONTO — Calgary Dinos receiver Nathan Coehoorn is one of three highly ranked Dinos prospects, along with Anthony Parker and Matt Walter, hoping to hear his name called during the May 8th CFL Canadian Draft. Coehoorn will head into the Canadian draft as the second ranked receiver behind only Parkler but if Coehoorn has his say it will be his name called first.

“I feel like I tested well this weekend and definitely have the ability to be the first receiver taken so we’ll see what happens,” said Coehoorn following the CFL’s annual Evaluation Camp in March.

Coehoorn performed well during E-Camp testing posting a 4.65 in the 40-yard dash, 15 reps of 225 pounds on the bench press and jumping 35.5 inches in the vertical jump. Not quite the raw athletic numbers of his teammate Parker but definitely good enough to keep him high on CFL teams draft lists.

And while Parker may have had a slight edge in testing numbers it was Coehoorn who was the Dinos’ leading receiver last year, posting 47 receptions for 753 yards and three touchdowns in regular season and playoff games combined.  He also led the conference in punt return yards with 494 on 42 returns in the regular season, and also was called on to carry the ball on occasion.

At 6’2”, 220 pounds, the 24 year old has drawn comparisons to Jason Clermont of the Saskatchewan Roughriders when it comes to his CFL potential.

“I definitely focus on being a big, physical receiver, banging guys off the line and going up to get the ball,” said Coehoorn.

“Playing in the slot means that you’re going to have contact on pretty much every play,” he said.

Whether he’s the first or second or third Dino selected in the Draft at the end of the day it’s CFL fans who will wind up the winners as they should get a chance to watch the talented young Canadian for years to come.
