Lions ink National DL Menard to two-year extension

The BC Lions Football Club announced today that Canadian defensive lineman David Menard has signed a two-year extension keeping him in BC through the 2017 season. Menard was set to enter the option year of his previous contract.

“David has been a very productive player for us and we expect him to continue to develop into an effective defensive lineman,” said GM and head coach Wally Buono. “Talented Canadian depth is critical to our success and having a player like David here for the next two years is a big signing for us.”

Developing into a draft day steal, Menard was the Lions’ fourth-round selection (32nd overall) in the 2014 CFL Draft and has appeared in all 36 regular season games over the past two years.

The former University of Montreal standout has notched 25 defensive tackles and eight sacks as back-up along the defensive line. Seeing his duties increase over the course of his stay in BC, he enjoyed one of his best games as a pro recording three defensive stops and a pair of sacks versus Saskatchewan in Week 13.

“I’ve loved my time in BC and it was important to me to stay with the Lions,” said Menard from his home in Quebec. “We’re going in the right direction and I can’t wait to get back on the field in 2016 and be part of what we’rebuilding.”

The Menard signing caps off a busy past two weeks for the Lions who also signed Canadians Kirby Fabien and Eric Fraser to new contracts as well as international receiver Emmanuel Arceneaux.
