Christmas Q&A I Micah Awe

Black Friday is in the rear-view mirror and Christmas is right around the corner. Trees have been decorated and lights have been hung, but thankfully there is still plenty of time to put off wrapping gifts.

Here at BCLions.com, we are catching up with some of the players and coaches from your BC Lions to find out their favourite things about the holidays. Recently we had the chance to talk with the Lions’ hard-nosed linebacker, Micah Awe.

Despite not earning a permanent starting job until week 11, the 23-year-old established himself as one of the most exciting players on the Lions’ defence in 2017. Micah registered 54 defensive tackles, 16 special teams stops, two pass breakups, one forced fumble and one tackle for a loss. The Texas Tech alum also developed a league-wide reputation as one of the hardest hitting linebackers as a rookie.

One of the most intelligent players on the team, Micah talked to us from Champagne, Illinois where he is spending his offseason working as a researcher at the University of Illinois.

Q: What do you look forward to most about the holidays?

A: “Seeing family is the best part of the holidays for me. As I get older, I am realizing that people don’t always get days off or have the time to see each other but Christmas is the one day of the year that everyone gets to be together.”

Q: What is your favourite Christmas movie?

A: “I am going to have to go with The Grinch because I watched it a year or two ago with my girlfriend and we realized that my smile was eerily similar to the Grinch’s.”

Q: What is the best gift you have ever received?

A: “The political answer would be the gift of my family. My parents gave me the best gift of all by giving me life. It wasn’t under the tree, but it still counts.”

Q: What is the best gift you have ever given?

A: “Every year I try to do something different, but in general I try to give something that is practical. My goal is to give someone something they will use every day.”

Q: What kind of food do you eat for Christmas Dinner?

A: “My family has Nigerian food for Christmas. My mom is a great cook and she is always in charge of the dinner. Every year we have Jollof rice and the meats that go with it, and it’s really delicious. My mom is a fantastic cook and I love everything she makes for us.”

Q: Do you open gifts on Christmas morning or Christmas Eve?

A: “Always Christmas morning.”

Q: Is there a memorable moment you can think of from Christmas as a kid?

A: “I just remember always trying to guess what I got for Christmas. We would tell our parents what we wanted and then presents would start to appear under the tree. I would always pick them up and shake them. I loved when you would pick up a gift and feel like, ‘oh, this is it! This is the present I wanted.’ And then you are either really excited or really disappointed on Christmas morning.”

On behalf of Micah Awe and the BC Lions, we would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!
