TMI: Jonathon Jennings the drummer?
When I sat down with Jonathon Jennings at Mark’s CFL Week in Winnipeg last month, I found out a few pretty interesting things about the BC Lions quarterback.
First of all, Jennings plays the drums (jam session with Argo Bear Woods? I need that to happen..) He’s been playing since high school and he just got himself a new set.
TheĀ person he’d be stranded on a deserted island with makesĀ completeĀ sense.
Oh, and Bombers fans, you may be a little upset with one of Jennings’ favourite football memories. Just sayin’. *Insert Kermit the Frog sipping tea meme*
Kristina Costabile: Tell me something that fans would be surprised to know about you.
Jonathon Jennings: Thereās nothing crazy but most people would know by now that Iām a drummer. Iāve been playing drums since I can remember. I grew up in the church playing and playing in the jazz band in high school.
KC: Do you still play?
JJ: I just bought an electronic drum set! I put it in my basement so itās not too loud.
KC: Other than playing the drums, what do you like to do in your spare time?
JJ: I like to golf. I like to read when I have time. I love just chilling. I can just chill in my basement and watch sports all day. (Editors note: Same, Jon, same.)
KC: Whatās on your pregame playlist?
JJ: I listen to gospel, honestly. I listen to a lot of gospel pregame. Sometimes, if Iām feeling crazy, Iāll listen to some J Cole. And every now and then some John Mayer. I switch it up, Iāll listen to anything.
KC: If you could be stranded on a deserted island with any one of your teammates, who would itĀ be and why?
JJ: It would have to be (Travis) Lulay, thatās the funniest part. It would have to be Lulay just because heās going to be conscientious about everything that needs to be done. Heās going to take care of that. Heās going to be thoughtful about things and heād be a good friend.
KC: So, what youāre saying is that heās going to do hard stuff and you just get to chill on the island?
JJ: Heās just going to make the plans! Iām going to help him out with the plans but heās going to set the plans up. Then weāre going to work together and have some good laughs out of it.
KC: If you werenāt a football player, what would you be doing?
JJ: Oh man, I donāt know. Digging ditches I guess. *laughs* Nah, Iām just kidding. Thatās what all the coaches will tell you. Theyāll say, āoh well if you werenāt playing football, youād be digging ditches!ā I was a finance major so Iād probably be doing something in the financial world. Some type of investment management or something.
KC: If you could eat one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?
JJ: I could probably eat chicken fried rice every day because you have a mix of everything.
KC: What is your favourite football memory?
JJ: I have two. In college we beat our rival Grand Valley with nine seconds left in the game. I threw a 40-yard touchdown to win that game. It was like, 55-52. And then the other one is beating Winnipeg in 2016 playoffs. That moment was pretty fun.
KC: What is a guilty pleasure song on your playlist?
JJ: I seriously like so many guilty pleasure songs. Nothing comes to mind but I can listen to (Justin) Bieber. Most people might say John Mayer music as well. Katy Perry ā Firework. If itās good music, Iām on it.
KC: Do you have any pregame superstitions or routines?
JJ: No, honestly, I try to stay away from superstition stuff because once you make it a thing, it becomes a thing. If I ever start thinking superstitious, Iām like, ānope, Iām just going to do it anyways.ā
