Be More Than a Bystander
Be More Than a Bystander is a groundbreaking initiative between the Ending Violence Association of British Columbia (EVA BC) and the BC Lions aimed at increasing the understanding regarding the impact of men’s violence against women.
The program will break the silence surrounding violence against women and girls by providing tools, language and practical ideas about how to be more than a bystander, how to speak up and how to communicate that violence and abuse is not acceptable. Partners include the BC Ministry of Children and Family Development, and Teck Resources, while also supported by the BC Federation of Labour.
A series of 29 school-based, interactive, educational workshops about gender-based violence facilitated by BC Lions players. The program promotes the importance of respectful relationships and what boys can do to help. The program targets youth grades 8 to 12.
Each presentation consists of a 40 minute assembly presentation open to all students, followed by a 40 ‘break-out’ session with a class-room sized subset of students from the assembly portion. Students who attend the breakout session will participate in a discussion with their peers on their thoughts and options of what they can do if they see or know someone being abused.
