Michael was signed as a free agent by the Lions in January of 2018.
2017: Michael was invited as an undrafted free agent by the Seattle Seahawks to a rookie mini-camp in May. In June, the pivot signed with the New Orleans Saints and attended mini-camp.
2012-2013: Michael began his collegiate career at James Madison University, where he threw for 3,206 yards with 26 touchdowns and 16 interceptions across 20 games. He added 489 yards and four scores on the ground.
2014-2015: Birdsong transferred to Marshall University in 2014, but saw limited action with the Thundering Herd after sitting out his first year. He compiled 365 yards through the air with two touchdowns and four interceptions in six games. Michael also ran for 51 yards and one major.
2016: Michael was a graduate transfer to Tennessee Tech University in 2016. The imposing quarterback had his best season as a Golden Eagle, tossing for 2,577 yards, 17 touchdowns and just seven interceptions. His accuracy was much improved, as he completed 62% of his passes. Michael also racked up 226 rushing yards and crossed the goal line four times.
A Sports and Recreation Management major at Marshall, Michael says his most memorable moment on the football field was leading a late touchdown drive to beat Purdue in his first start with the Herd. He lists Friday Night Lights as his favourite movie and How I Met Your Mother as his top television show. Michael is a country music fan, particularly enjoying the musical stylings of Whiskey Myers. A lover of all things outdoors, you’ll most likely find Michael hunting in the woods or fishing when he isn’t throwing touchdown passes. He cites his father as his biggest supporter and makes his offseason home in Richmond, VA.
