More than three weeks after Simon Fraser University abruptly shut down its long and storied football program, the determination to bring it back hasn’t wavered. Lions owner Amar Doman has helped spearhead the efforts by pledging to match any donations up to $500,000 from Tuesday’s 1 Day For SFU Football campaign. The response has been tremendous. The school’s passionate alumni have been front and centre encouraging people to sign the petition and lend their support in any way possible. Lion SFU legends Lui Passaglia, Sean Millington and Glen Jackson have spoken up by telling the school to remove them from its Hall of Fame. While the news was crushing to all football supporters across Canada, the response has been very heartwarming.
“Over 1,000 donors, almost a million dollars. Let’s hope that this money will get put to work so we can have a season this fall.”
