TORONTO — It’s tough to miss Queen’s offensive lineman Matt O’Donnell. At six-foot-ten, 340 lbs. he is usually the biggest man in the room by a fair margin.
When O’Donnell first suited up at Queen’s back in 2007 he was a sizable yet very green 18-year-old rookie. But his time spent under the Queen’s coaching staff allowed him to develop into one of the top offensive line prospects in the country heading into the May 8 Canadian Draft. Heading into the draft O’Donnell is ranked 11th on the CFL Amateur Scouting Bureau’s list of the top prospects.
The ranking is certainly deserved after an impressive college career. He won the Gaels’ Justin Schwieg Trophy as most improved player in 2008 before being named the team’s top lineman in 2009. He was also named a first-team All-Canadian in both 2009 and 2010, and took home the OUA award for best lineman this past season.
O’Donnell’s exploits also earned him an invite to suit up in the 86th edition of the prestigious East-West Shrine Game this past January at the Florida Citrus Bowl in Orlando.
Come draft day O’Donnell isn’t too concerned about where he goes just excited to have the chance to continue to play.
“I just love playing football so I’ll play wherever as long as I can keep playing,” he said.
