BC Lions running back Chris Rainey was a force on the ground, as a pass catcher and as a returner en route to earning CFL Player of the Week honours following his performance in the club’s impressive 36-27 win over the Blue Bombers last Saturday in Winnipeg.
Rainey, making his first start at running back with the Leos, racked up 304 total yards including a career-high 106 rushing yards on 16 carries and another career mark with 89 more through the air on six receptions including two for touchdowns. The ‘Rain Man’ also registered 109 kick return yards.
His biggest contribution of the night however, came with a little less than 10 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter with the Lions clinging to a narrow 26-24 lead as the speedy scat-back got open behind the Bombers’ secondary making a remarkable over-the-shoulder catch for a 40-yard touchdown.
“Keep your eyes on the ball at all times,” said Rainey about his highlight reel grab after the win.
“Every day in practice the goal is to be better than every receiver out there. When the ball is in the air, I am coming down with it.”
“He’s a guy that is one of the most tremendous football players I have ever played with, he really has a knack and love for the game, he loves it more than a lot of guys and he just wants that opportunity. You saw what he could do anytime he touches the ball.”
The fourth quarter major put the Lions in front 33-24 and the momentum gained from the highlight reel touchdown reception carried the team to a 36-27 victory.
Rainey and his teammates are back on the practice field today as the club begins preparations for their season finale on Saturday night versus the Toronto Argonauts presented by Nissan. The first 5,000 fans through the gates at BC Place on Saturday will receive an Emmanuel Arceneaux bobblehead.
